As we step into the first month of 2025, there’s no better time to ask one of the most impactful questions you’ll ever pose to yourself: Who do I want to be?
This question might seem simple, but its power lies in its ability to illuminate your values, goals, and the future version of yourself you aspire to become. Inspired by Viola Davis’s memoir Finding Me, which chronicles her extraordinary journey from a challenging childhood to becoming the woman she is today, this blog is dedicated to helping you break through the barriers holding you back and guiding you toward your true self.
Viola’s story reminds us that becoming is a process. She begins her autobiography with memories as early as three years old, navigating hardships and responsibilities far beyond her years. Her resilience and determination to become the woman she wanted to be are lessons we can all draw from. If you haven’t yet read Finding Me, I encourage you to pick up a copy—every purchase supports a local bookstore in my community.
Visualizing the Future You
To uncover who you want to be, you must allow yourself to dream freely, without the constraints of current responsibilities, financial barriers, or self-doubt. Below is a guided journaling exercise to help you create a vivid, sensory-rich picture of your future self.
Take a moment to sit in a quiet space, grab a pen and paper (or your favorite journaling tool), and answer these questions:
1. Where am I living?
Describe your environment. Is it a bustling city, a cozy countryside, or a serene beach?
2. What am I doing?
What does your day-to-day life look like? Are you leading a team, creating art, teaching, or traveling?
3. What am I wearing?
Picture your style. Are there specific colors, fabrics, or accessories that define your look?
4. What color is my hair? Am I wearing any unique accessories?
Consider the small details that make you feel like your most authentic self.
5. Who is with me?
Are you surrounded by loved ones, friends, or colleagues? Or do you find peace in solitude?
6. What is this person’s favorite leisure activity?
How do you unwind or find joy in your free time?
7. How do I make a living?
What career or passion fuels your purpose and provides for your lifestyle?
8. What does my home look like?
Visualize the details—your furniture, decorations, and the overall vibe of your space.
9. What does this place smell like?
Is it fresh like the ocean, earthy like a forest, or cozy with the scent of candles and baked goods?
10. What does this place feel like?
Think about the textures and emotions that surround you.
11. What does this place look like?
Capture the details, from the layout to the lighting and everything in between.
Take It Further
Once you’ve answered these questions, go deeper. Ask yourself:
• What does my morning routine look like?
• What are my values, and how do I live them every day?
• What new habits or skills have I developed?
• What brings me the most joy and fulfillment?
This exercise isn’t just about dreaming—it’s about removing mental barriers and visualizing a clear path toward your ideal self. Once you’ve written down your answers, let them sit with you. Revisit them often, adjust as needed, and allow them to guide your choices and actions throughout the year.
